Get me out of the city , take me back through the desert
Through the winding canyons
Up into the mountains, that’s where I belong
There’s too many people, too many cars
Too much concrete, there’s no room to breathe
I’ll trade neon signs for starry skies,
Headlights for moonlight, any night at all
Forget those TVs, leave those bars
I’ll meet you by the campfire, any night at all
Cold air pricks my fingertips as I press them against
the steel strings of my guitar
Strumming lightly, I watch the notes float by,
spreading out from our perch so high above the city
Five days, four more days, oh no
Three days, two more till I go,
and with the dawn comes another
The notes trickle down into the chamber where you lie asleep
I hope when they reach your ears, they tickle with a soft caress,
and cause a faint smile to spread across your lips
Tomorrow though I may go my heart will stay right here
amongst these desert foothills
No longer can I rest
my eyes are open wide
Weapons clutched to my chest
My stomach tied in knots
I look up at the moon, at her soft glowing light
And squaring my shoulders I make my decree:
Shadows, you will not overtake me tonight
And with a shining beacon casting light on my face
I look to the south, towards the land of my saving grace
I turn to the East, my thoughts brimming bright
And eagerly await my first glimpse of the dawn’s early light
